Roller Meal Price To Go Up
In more bad news for struggling Zimbabweans, the Government has announced it is in the process of removing subsidies for the commodity which will likely result in the prices of the cheaper maize roller meal going up.
This was revealed by Finance and Economic Development Deputy Minister Clemence Chiduwa during an answer and question session in Parliament on Wednesday.
Chidawu said the decision to phase out roller meal subsidies was made following administrative challenges, which saw undeserving persons benefiting from the subsidy.
He was responding to a question from Midlands MP (proportional representation) Catherine Gozho (MDC) who wanted an explanation regarding Government’s policy on the maize meal subsidy, considering that there were still mealie meal shortages.
Chidawu said Goverment through his ministry had availed resources amounting to $813 110 525 towards the implementation of the new roller meal subsidy.
Treasury has availed resources amounting to $813 110 525 towards the implementation of the new roller meal subsidy. However, given the administrative burden associated with implementing the maize roller meal subsidy, Government is introducing a targeted cash transfer system to vulnerable households. This system will result in the phasing out of the roller meal subsidy as beneficiaries will be given cash to purchase the roller meal on their own.
He said his ministry and that of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in partnership with NetOne, was in the process of registering vulnerable groups in all urban areas to disburse cash transfers.
He said once registration is complete roller meal subsidies will cease.
Once registration is complete, the proposal is to cease roller meal subsidy through millers as the vulnerable households will be receiving cash transfer that will enable them to buy roller meal and other basics from the market.
Goverment introduced subsidies on roller meal in December 2019. The price for a 10kg of roller meal is $70 ZWL. Roller meal price is expected to go up once Government phases out the subsidy. There is a section of Zimbabweans that are skeptical the new approach by Government to transfer cash to vulnerable families will be effective.
