Bata Hints On Possible Retrenchment Due To COVID-19

As the world is reeling over the effects of the COVID-19, so many companies are faced with the daunting prospect of contemplating possible retrenchment due to the impacts of the pandemic on their businesses. As such, Zimbabwe’s shoe manufacturing giant Bata has reportedly begun to feel the harsh economic pinch from the COVID-19 lockdown and may see a retrenchment of its workers.

If the knock of the pandemic intensifies and stretches, the shoe manufacture may be forced to take the unprecedented step and let go of its human capital, the company’s Managing Director Simon Mutisya hinted.

Speaking to ZiFM Stereo, Simon Mutisya said the decision on whether or not the retrenchment will continue will depend on how hard the knock will be on operations from the pandemic.

“With regards to workers(retrenchment), we will see how the situation unfolds, but as of now, we were able to keep the entire workforce intact, for how long or what form and shape we will see how it goes.”

On 1 May, President Emmerson Mnangagwa extended the country’s national lockdown by two more weeks seeing industries, the mining sector, retail shops opening but with restrictions. Bata also resumed operations with more than 15% of its workers getting back to work.

But the decision on possible retrenchment is ascertained by the limited resources for production, most of which is imported from outside the country. And less retail operations countrywide as customers are under lockdown.
