DStv Hikes Prices
Popular satellite broadcaster DStv has hiked the prices of its bouquet subscriptions across the board, a development which is unlikely to be welcomed by subscribers. The price hike is in United States Dollar (USD) terms and is effective 1 June 2020.
According to MultiChoice Zimbabwe, the price hike has been necessitated by the prevailing 14.5 percent VAT charge in Zimbabwe. Multichoice Zimbabwe also highlighted that this is the first adjustment of DStv monthly subscription fees in four years.
In a statement, MultiChoice Zimbabwe said,
“In appreciation of the tough times in Zimbabwe, the business is adding value to its customers at a time when they need it. DStv added more channels to its line-up, brought more of the latest movies to BoxOffice and acquired the best award-winning sport documentaries from around the globe through SuperSport. Furthermore, news channels have been made widely accessible for credible information alongside edutainment and daily workouts designed by fitness experts.
“As a way of thanking our valued customers for their continuous support during this difficult time, DStv launched the ‘We’ve Got You’ campaign whereby active and disconnected customers automatically get upgraded to the higher package at no extra cost once they pay for their current package.”
The DStv Lite package will increase from US$7 to US$8 while the Access package will increase from US$11 to US$13. The family package will increase from US$17 to US$19, the Compact package from US$25 to US$29, Compact Plus from US$40 to US$45, Premium from US$65 to US$75, HD PVR Premium from US$76 to US$88, XtraView access fee from US$11 to US$13 and Indian package from US$32 to US$37.
Here are the new DStv prices effective 1 June 2020.
|Package||Current Price Per Month (USD)||New Price Per Month (USD)|
|HD PVR Premium||$76||$88|
|XtraView Access Fee||$11||$13|
The increase comes at a time when South African subscribers are up in arms against DStv and have started an online petition. The petition is calling for the broadcaster to give South African subscribers a payment break or to decrease the price of its subscriptions altogether during the Covid-19 induced national lockdown. The online petition which was started about 2 weeks ago has accumulated well over 200 000 signatures at the time of publishing.
