State-owned mobile network operator NetOne finally backed down and reversed its astronomical data hike on Friday that had left many Zimbabweans stunned.

Zimbabweans were shocked to learn that following a review of data bundle prices, NetOne’s One-Fi bundles now ranged from $16,250 for 10 Gb of data to $99,000 for 80 Gb of data.

These amounts translated to US$81 for 10 Gb of data to US$495 for 80 Gb of data using the black market rates. Using the official bank rates, the prices became even more astronomical and ranged from US$131 for 10 Gb of data to US$798 for 80 Gb of data.

Unsurprisingly, this resulted in a lot of outrage on social media platforms from concerned Zimbabweans. The ruling Zanu PF party’s youth league also made its concerns about the pricing known to the MInister of ICT Jenfren Muswere.

Tendai Chirau, the Zanu PF Youth League’s secretary for administration, tweeted.

The youth league is currently engaging the Ministry of ICT led by youthful @HonJMuswereJnr on the recent increase of data prices by @NetOneCellular. The prices are out of reach of many, it’s our hope that there will be a reversal.

Hours later, NetOne announced that it was looking into all the concerns raised by the public.

In light of the recent tariff reviews, NetOne would like to thank our valued customers for your feedback which is greatly appreciated and is of paramount importance to us. We are in the process of looking into all the concerns that you have raised, and we will keep you posted on further developments.

A few hours after NetOne’s announcement, Chirau announced that a reversal was imminent.

NetOne eventually reversed the astronomical price hike and reverted to old tariffs.
