Econet Wireless founder and Group Chairman, Dr. Strive Masiyiwa has been named among the ‘World’s 50 Greatest Leaders’ by the prestigious Fortune’s Magazine.
The Zimbabwean billionaire, telecoms mogul and philanthropist is number 48 on a list that also includes International tennis sensation Naomi Osaka, country music legend Dolly Parton and the Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern who occupies the first position.
Masiyiwa who sits on the Africa Progress Panel as well as the boards of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and Rockefeller Foundation, was described by Fortune Magazine as a persuasive advocate for development opportunities and the creation of strong government institutions.
Rockefeller Foundation president Judith Rodin, who calls him “a champion for the power of technology to improve the lives of millions,” said Strive Masiyiwa is truly one of Africa’s most influential figures, whose good counsel is sought by world leaders and CEOs.
Strive Masiyiwa has had a very eventful 2020 starting with being named as a special representative to the African Union in charge of the COVID-19 response.
He was central to the creating of the Africa Medical Supply Platform (ASMP) which is an online marketplace designed to make it easier for African Union member nations to receive PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment), COVID medication, and vaccines.
As a member of the African Union’s special envoy in charge of acquiring materials to fight Covid-19, he has helped procure 700 million vaccine doses.
On a personal level, Masiyiwa was last year appointed by Netflix to its board of directors. He became the first African to sit on the board of the world’s biggest streaming service, Netflix.
